June's meeting at Southwood was a great success and we welcomed two new clayers, Victoria and Jitka. We hope to see them again soon! Our gratitude to Paige Scott for leading the group in an Image Transfer class. If you missed the meeting, or would like a refresher, here are some links to various image transfer techniques:

July Meeting

Our July meeting will be on Sunday, July 6 at 1 PM at the Southwood Welcome Home Center. Because it's a holiday weekend, this will be an Open Clay Day. Bring current projects to work on or request a demo. This meeting would be a great opportunity for you to work on canes for our first Guild Cane Swap coming in August.

Here's how the swap will work:

  • Create one or more polymer clay (millefiore) canes. They can be anything, including geometric, leaves, flowers, bugs, abstract, etc.
  • Reduce and divide your cane into pieces that are 2" long by 1/2" - 1" in diameter. Be sure to note what brand clay you used to create the cane as baking temperatures vary among the brands. Bring at least 4 pieces, preferably more, to the August meeting on August 3, 2008.
  • For each cane piece you bring, you will swap with another Guild member. If you bring 6 cane pieces, and there are 6 people in attendance, everyone will get a piece of your cane, and you'll get a piece of their canes.
  • Go back to your studio and create something with the canes you receive and bring it for Show & Tell to the September meeting.

Don't hesitate to write with questions. I"ll send out a reminder closer to our July meeting!

Have a great month!

Barbara

June Meeting: Image Transfers

Member Paige Scott gives us her tips and tricks to successful image transfers! This is a great technique to have in your polymer clay 'arsenal' and can be used in so many ways!  Here is Paige's recommended supply list:

  • Basic Clay Kit (see the list on our web site)
  • Bottle of transfer medium (the Guild will provide some if you don't have any)
  • Images on Epson photo paper*
  • White Clay (or translucent or ecru for a sepia look)
  • Scotch tape
  • Small ceramic baking tile
  • wide flat paintbrush (I use 1/2" wide)
  • parchment paper (I will bring a roll)
  • small bowl (for soaking images)
  • Heat gun (optional) or clay oven (Guild will provide)
Paige will demonstrate two methods. One involves a reversed image pressed into white clay and the other involves a non-reversed image that is painted and cured layer by layer. Page will bring a number of copyright-free images for everyone to use.

*Old formula Epson paper works best. Feel free to bring images on other brands of paper as test samples.

If time allows, Barbara will also demonstrate waterslide decal transfers.

Meeting Details

The June 2008 meeting will take place on Sunday, June 1 at 1 PM. We usually go until about 5 PM, so feel free to come by anytime that afternoon. I understand that some people attend religious services on Sunday and can't make the 1 PM start time, no worries! We'll be glad to see you whenever you arrive.

If you are interested in meeting for lunch before the meeting, or having dinner afterwards, please let me know and we'll try to set something up.

Also at the June meeting, we'll hammer out the details for doing a guild-wide Cane Swap this summer.  This will be open to ALL skill levels, so I hope you'll participate.

The June meeting will be at our NEW home in the Southwood Town Center at the Beazer Home Welcome Center, on Merchant's Row. They have a marvelous community/meeting room that they have offered to us free of charge. There are two large tables, plenty of natural light, a large whiteboard and countertop space for storage/snacks, etc. There are restrooms close by, plenty of parking and we are walking distance to several restaurants and an coffee bar/restaurant.

Directions: Capital Circle Soutbound to Merchant's Row. Take a left. Continue straight after stopping at Four Oaks Blvd. The Southwood Welcome Center will be on your left, between Sharkey's Coffee and Subway. Enter through the main entrance, then continue towards the back to the meeting room.  Click here for a Google Map of the area.

Supplies buy

We will be holding a supplies buy in May. Please bring your orders with you to the May meeting.   Contact Barbara for information. Payment due by our meeting on May 4.

We're moving on down the road!

The May meeting will be at our NEW home in the Southwood Town Center at the Beazer Home Welcome Center, on Merchant's Row. They have a marvelous community/meeting room that they have offered to us free of charge. There are two large tables, plenty of natural light, a large whiteboard and countertop space for storage/snacks, etc. At the current time we will not be able to use an oven for curing, but we will be working with them to find a suitable (and nearby) location where we could plug in an oven for curing. There are restrooms closeby, plenty of parking and we are walking distance to several restaurants and an coffee bar/restaurant.

Directions: Capital Circle Soutbound to Merchant's Row. Take a left. Continue straight after stopping at Four Oaks Blvd. The Beazer Welcome Center will be on your left, between Sharkey's Coffee and Subway. Enter through the main entrance, then continue towards the back to the meeting room.  Click here for a Google Map of the area .

Thank you, Paige for making these arrangements for us. We look forward to making new clay friends at Southwood.

Upcoming meeting dates/times. Themes to be announced (feel free to send us some ideas !)

  • Sunday, May 4 @ 1 PM
  • Sunday, June 1 @ 1 PM

As always, come anytime between the hours of 1 PM and 4 PM. After two meetings we will evaluate this location  based on member feedback.
